Early electrical research was characterized by a shift from craft electrical devices inspired by scientific experiments to mass-produced, reliably behaving commodities. Many early electronic components and radio manufacturers had mail order catalogs printed in-house which often evolved into early hobbyist and trade journals. Because of their commercial status, the contents of wide arrays of these journals are not indexed in the major engineering databases. This presentation will preview preliminary results of a quantitative analysis measuring the extent to which the early history of radio and its publications are discoverable in websites but not through academic providers.
